During Seminary, Dobberstein was ill with pneumonia. He prayed to Mary for his recovery and vowed to build a shrine in her honor if he recoved. His prayers were answered and he survived. he completed seminary and moved to West Bend, Iowa to become a priest. When he came to West Bend in 1898, he began collecting rocks, minerals, gemstones, and crystals from around the world.
As promised in his prayers, construction began in 1912 and continued until his death in 1954. Today, the Grotto covers an entire city block and features nine separate grottos, each depicting a scene from the life of Jesus. The walls and archways sparkle with quartz, petrified wood, malachite, jasper azurite, agates, geodes, topaz, calcite, stalactites, stalagmites, and even semi-precious gems—millions of dollars’ worth of rare stones, all donated or collected over decades.
